In aesthetic dentistry, our goal is not simply to create whiter or straighter teeth. Porcelain veneers allow us to correct many of these concerns in the anterior region using a relatively conservative approach.
With porcelain veneers:

Worn teeth can be restored to their original form.
Permanent discoloration can be masked.
Tooth length and proportions can be adjusted.

However, porcelain veneers are not the correct treatment for every aesthetic concern. For some patients, orthodontic treatment, composite bonding, teeth whitening, or other restorative approaches may be more conservative and appropriate.

Who Is Not a Suitable Candidate for Porcelain Veneers?
Although porcelain veneers can provide excellent results, they are not suitable for every patient.
Alternative treatments or management of existing problems may need to be considered first in patients with:
Severe uncontrolled teeth clenching or grinding
Significant bite abnormalities
Advanced periodontal disease
Insufficient enamel
Severe dental crowding
Extensive structural tooth loss
Active and widespread tooth decay
Persistent traumatic habits such as nail biting or chewing on pens
Teeth grinding does not necessarily make veneer treatment impossible in every case. Depending on the individual situation, protective measures such as wearing a night guard after veneer treatment may be recommended.
How Are Porcelain Veneers Applied?
1. Examination and Smile Analysis
Before treatment, the teeth, gums, and bite are carefully evaluated.
Particularly when planning anterior aesthetics, we assess:
Facial proportions
Lip line
Smile line
Gum levels
Tooth dimensions
Proportions between the teeth
Existing tooth color
These factors should be evaluated together rather than independently.
2. Digital Impressions and Smile Design
A digital intraoral scanner can be used to create a three-dimensional model of the teeth.
Photographs and digital impressions can then be used to plan the patient's new smile digitally.
With Digital Smile Design, the approximate shape, length, and position of the teeth within the smile can be evaluated before treatment begins.
3. Mock-Up
One of the stages we consider particularly valuable in porcelain veneer treatment is the mock-up, or treatment preview.
The planned tooth shapes can be temporarily transferred onto the patient's existing teeth using a provisional material.
The patient can then evaluate:
Tooth length
Overall tooth shape
Smile line
Relationship between the teeth and lips
This allows the patient and dentist to evaluate and refine the design together before the permanent porcelain veneers are fabricated.
4. Tooth Preparation
When required, a very thin layer of tooth structure is removed from the front surface.
The objective is to remain within the enamel whenever possible because adhesive bonding of porcelain veneers to enamel provides a strong and predictable bond.
In suitable cases, veneers may be applied without any tooth preparation.
5. Fabrication of Porcelain Veneers
Customized porcelain veneers are fabricated according to digital or conventional impressions.

6. Try-In and Permanent Bonding
Before permanent bonding, the completed veneers are tried in the mouth.

Once both the patient and dentist are satisfied with the result, the porcelain veneers are bonded to the teeth using specialized adhesive systems.
How Long Does Porcelain Veneer Treatment Take?
Treatment duration varies depending on the number of teeth being treated, whether gum treatment is required, and the overall complexity of the case.
In many cases where no additional gum procedures are required, treatment can be completed within several appointments.
However, achieving the correct result is just as important as achieving a fast result in aesthetic dentistry. Particularly when multiple anterior teeth are being treated, the try-in and evaluation stages should not be skipped.
Can Porcelain Veneers Be Applied Without Shaving the Teeth?
In some patients, yes.
When tooth position and shape are appropriate, prepless or no-prep veneers may be applied without removing tooth structure.
However, using this technique for every patient may not produce an aesthetically appropriate result.
For example, adding porcelain to teeth that are already prominent or bulky without any preparation may cause them to appear excessively thick.
Therefore, "veneers without shaving the teeth" should not be regarded as the primary treatment objective. Instead, it should be considered a technique available for appropriately selected patients.
What Is the Difference Between Porcelain Veneers and Zirconia Crowns?
Porcelain veneers and zirconia crowns are restorations with different indications.
A veneer primarily covers the front surface of the tooth and aims to preserve as much natural tooth structure as possible.
A zirconia crown surrounds the tooth more extensively.
